When I was contacted by the folks at Toyota, via Jackson Spalding, a few weeks back and asked to test drive a new Toyota Tundra, I have to admit, I was hesitant. Me, a guy with a Prius, test out a Toyota Tundra?
Yep, I almost let that one get away, but now I am glad I didn’t. Why might you ask?
Well, for starters, the Toyota Tundra is one awesome piece of machinery! The model that I tested was a Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition, and it is what others trucks aspire to be!
This one will leave all others saying “yeah, it’s nice, but it’s No Toyota!
What is a 1794 Edition Toyota Tundra?
The Tundra 1794 edition is a new package added to the Toyota Tundra line of trucks for the 2014 year model. It is basically a platinum edition, but with some added features, bells and (a lot) of whistles. The Platinum edition is a chromed out version of the truck, and the 1794 edition is a western themed model. This is evident in it’s brown cowboy styled leather seats and wood grain dash trim and other inserts.
It has a special “1794 edition” badge on various places in the truck including the center console, both front sides, as well as on the front surfaces of the driver and passenger seat backs. This REALLY sets things off and give a nice custom look to the leather trimmed areas of the truck.
There is no lack of pep in your step when you step on the gas. The Tundra 1794 edition sports a 381hp, 5.7 liter v8. There is plenty to get you around town, and then some. If you are interested, the Tundra has a 10,000 lb towing capacity. Nothing is going to stop this thing. It is a very capable truck. Having said that you might forget that you are driving a truck.
This truck really performs much like a full size SUV. I drove the family around in it on multiple occasions and it it exactly what I would want in a truck, that would also fit a family. Business in the front, and a party (for the kids) in the rear.
The Tundra 1794 is based on the Crewmax line of trucks. Translation, this thing has a back seat that is huge! Much larger than my wife’s SUV. The ride is comparable to what I would expect to find in truck, but is very smooth and not jerky/bumpy as some trucks are.
A great feature that I also liked was the back doors. They open to almost a complete 90 degrees. This allows for great access when getting the kids and all of their junk in and out. No more door hitting you in the back as you struggle to get them buckled in. Not only that, but the back seats fold back for great access if you want to haul something up front that needs to stay dry on those rainy days!
The kids have plenty of room in the back, so much so that my son asked me “Why do we have to give the truck back Daddy”?
Other features that I REALLY liked about the Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition
- Dual Zone Climate control
- Power Thigh and Lumbar Support. This is great for long drives, trust me, I do a LOT of them.
- A backup camera!
- A bluetooth enabled, Entune, JBL Premium with too many features to list stereo/navigation/weather station. This thing ROCKS! It has just about any feature that you could want in a radio.
- I really like the custom leather seats with the 1794 edition logos.
